Vice President Adel Abdul Mahdi met on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, with U.S. Vice President.
The two sides discussed the importance of properly implementing the Security Agreement and altering the functions of U.S. troops from combat to training and logistical support. They also spoke about the need to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in education to serve the interest of the Iraqi and U.S people, and contribute to bridging the economic and industrial gap in Iraq and other regional states.
They also reviewed the government formation consultations, and stressed on the importance of establishing a democracy in Iraq and protecting it from any breaches or practices that may harm it. They both emphasized the importance of accelerating the formation of the government because the delay disrupts the interests of the Iraqi people, where they pointed out that the democratic process needs to give enough time for discussions so that they can be effective and reflect the aspirations of the Iraqi people.
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said his country does not support a particular candidate for the Prime Minister Post and that he and the administration welcomes what the political forces agree upon. Biden hopes that these consultations and discussions lead to a national partnership government capable of running the country with democratic and participatory spirit.
VP Mahdi pointed out that the developments in negotiations of government formation, and explained that the next two days may witness great progress in these negotiations and the resolution of the Iraqi National Coalition candidate, thereby helping to give impetus to the negotiations to form a government. |
